Hello, my name is Tom, and I'm an English teacher from America currently living and teaching in Shenzhen. I’ve been teaching English for 17 years, and was an English teacher in America before traveling to China. I specialize in teaching Children, as this is what I enjoy most. That said I also teach adults with equal skill, I merely enjoy teaching kids a bit more. I studied English in university, receiving my Masters Degree in English. I did not study something other than English, and then come to China to teach English. No, I studied English, and how to teach it properly. I then went on to be a public school teacher in America for 10 years. Teaching in America is nothing like teaching in China, and the standards to become a teacher in my home country are much higher than they are here in China. I’m a certified public school teacher from the USA, and the subject I taught before even coming to China was English. Don’t settle for a teacher who only teaches Oral English. "What is Oral English?" Oral English is when you and your teacher spend the entire class talking, and the only teaching they do is occasionally correcting mistakes you make. That isn’t teaching, that is just talking, and anyone can do that. Oral English classes are not enough. Talking is not enough. An English teacher must be able to teach you grammar, something most native English teachers cannot do effectively, as doing so requires a lot more education and training. In addition to this an English teacher must also be able to "teach", something that requires proper education and understanding. It is because of this that the vast majority of Chinese believe that native speaking English teachers are only good at helping Chinese students with their "oral" English, meaning pronunciation, and some vocabulary. Sadly this is true, but only because most western English teachers living in China "don't" have the proper training, education, or experience required to teach English correctly. Why would you choose to be taught, or have your child learn from someone who isn't qualified to do the job properly? Choose a professional teacher, with the experience and education to teach you properly! Don't give your money to someone who will only practice speaking with you, but teach you little, or nothing about English. Don't hire someone to teach you who doesn’t know how to teach. My education and experience before coming to China was in Education and English, not something unrelated, as is the case with most Native speaking English teachers.
